Get a helmet or wait?

Show me anyone who accepts only the current Snell standard, please.
Your description based on the certifications was perfectly accurate, and I didn't take issue with that. I just thought that the phrase "good for 10 years" was ambiguous.

I don't have an opinion on the SA05 vs. SA10.
However, before you purchase a helmet make sure you try it on. Helmets fit everyone differently and you don't want to be stuck wearing a helmet that's uncomfortable and doesn't fit correctly.

A motorcycle helmet is not SA rated which has to do with fire resistance as well as strike type and location. You may get away with it for an event or two but eventually you're going to get sent home without a refund; moreover, it's dangerous. As litigation and insurance costs rise, I strongly suspect we're going to be seeing more and proper enforcement of helmet and other safety rules.

As it happens, I have both an M2000 and an SA2005 helmet. I consider both of them to be acceptibly safe.

I disagree with the statement that it is dangerous, and I have never participated in any kind of driving event which did not accept a Snell-rated "M" helmet of the correct year. There may be such events, but I've never encountered one.

I am shocked given that you guys are out west, especially CA. Here in GA I have seen people sent home, typically they get one warning. Should state that these are HPDEs, not involved in autoX at all.
