I've posted a couple of teaser pictures on my Facebook account and figured I'd show the forum something I've been working on. This is just a poll to see how much interest there is for a product of this nature. If you would be interested in this product, please post in this thread. Any other feedback on design, fitment, reasonable pricing, etc. is welcome. I'm just testing the water at this point.

STR-legal two-piece rear rotor set for S2ks

Details:

• OE caliper compatible
• 9.5 lb assembled weight
• Currently 1/2" (12.7mm) thick solid rotor
• 286mm outer diameter
• Steel rings (available in annealed or heat treated, slotted and/or drilled also available for extra $$)
• Replacement ring cost: ~$100-120 ea.
• Replacement rings available from custom disc vendor, ~1.5 week lead time
• 8X 5/16"-18 fasteners between center hat & rotor
• Correct center bore for S2k rear hub
• Pricing TBD
• Fitment verified on AP1 (assume AP2 will work fine, as well)

This rotor was developed to compliment a lightweight caliper assembly that is in the works. I'm working on the caliper side of the project, but do not know when I'll have it complete.

Again, any feedback is welcome. I know what the assembly cost me (excluding design & fab time), but I'm curious what others would be willing to pay for something like this.

Jake I'd be in, two rotors with replacement cost $100 each, that would leave $300 to cover the hats and bolt. I think $500 is fair but wouldn't want to pay more then that.

What's the weight of a stock rear rotor?

 

This is worth it to save the rear hubs..

Stock rotor is 11 lbs so saving 1.5 lbs.

On the side of the top hat it says "Wilwood" so I'm assuming this is a off the self tophat but when I search 5x4.5" bolt pattern I'm not seeing one that matches exactly with the one in the picture. If you have a source for custom rotors and can give a link to the correct tophat and bolts we need this should be easy to put together!

I'm not sure if your wanting to sell these and make money or just wanting to help everyone out and give them a source for these rotors.

Yes, I did start with a Wilwood center hat. So, your price range is correct for the base components. However, there are no Wilwood center hat designs that will easily work with the OE caliper. The whole goal was to make something that could be used with OE calipers or aftermarket calipers. The light-weight caliper portion of the project is much more difficult and I may just default to an off-the-shelf caliper assembly....but it costs a significant amount of money.

A $500 two-piece rear rotor kit just isn't in the cards. If you start with Wilwood center hats, you have to machine them. If you start with blank aluminum billet discs, you have to machine them. At $500, you aren't paying for machine time, assembly labor, fasteners to build each rotor or the hardware to get the caliper spacing correct... not to mention profit. That'd be the whole goal for any company willing to take on this project, right? So, I added the lower end of the poll as more a "I'm only will to spend this much on a similar product." If people are only willing to spend $500 on a set of two-piece rear rotors, it'll never happen as a manufactured product. But! That's the whole intent of this interest thread.

After running the calipers today at an auto-x, I think I will reduce the ring thickness. The parking brake seems to be dragging a bit at 1/2" thick rotors and causes a fair amount of noise. The friction level isn't noticeable, but the noise is noticeable during street driving. So far, the Carbotech XP10s are staying true to their reputation, easy on the rotors.

Maybe up to $750 but wouldn't go past that for 3 lbs total. Give me a caliper setup and we can double that number...

 

I'm not in this to make money. This is a niche market and I understand the sales volume would be low. I'd get more satisfaction from seeing a product I designed and/or fabricated on a championship winning car.

Yep, I figured the caliper option would be the deal sealer. If the stock calipers weigh in around 10 pounds, there should be a total weight loss of 12-14 pounds if you can switch to a lightweight rear caliper setup. The calipers I'm tinkering with weigh ~3.2 lbs each with pads.
