If you take your time and think out your mods, tuning is much easier. My E36 M3 was pretty much un-drivable for a while, till I spent a few hours tuning and testing, now it's one of my fastest A Class cars.
As a general rule of thumb, I do race suspension, weight reduction, race slicks, widest tires, aero, and then power mods in that order. I always max the aero out, any speed you lose on the straights you make up in corners.
My friends and I just started doing our own spec Miata races, and it's the best racing we've had, its a blast!
