Default Fitting race tires on Harbor Freight trailer

I'm having problems fitting race tires (225 front, 245 rear) on the Harbor Freight trailer. If the trailer was about 2" wider, it wouldn't be a problem.

Any of you have any secrets for getting all of them to fit on the trailer? I'm using the trailer w/ the 8" wheels (will be up converting them to 12"), Harbor Freight Item # 42708-6VGA.

Thanks,
Warren

Warren-

You have to build a support frame that will raise the height of the bottom of your tires above the trailer support frame and allow you to gain the added width needed. This has been discussed before. See the stickies in the Racing & Competition FAQ List, particularly

I just made the bed of the whole trailer 1/2" plywood, and then built grooves for the tires with 2x4s and 2x2s. Then I strap them down firmly. Works fine, even with 235/255 RA-1s.

124Spider,
You have any pics of that? That seems interesting. I finally came up w/ an idea.

I bolted a 4" PVC pipe just to the rear of the center section of the frame then bolted a 3" PVC pipe on the inside of the rear frame rail, on top of the little lip of the frame. That brought the tires up to the required height.

Now I just have to find a bigger cargo box for the front. I bought this one from Home Depot for $30 (24"x21"x19", I think). That won't hold my folding chair or the 10x10 Easy Up canopy. I'm looking for something like a 40"x24".

Here's a picture of the "Walmart box" that a lot of us use. (About $40) I think it is made by Contico. I don't think you'll get an EZ-Up in it though. I do carry a Harbor freight racing jack, a 5 gallon air tank, and a decent size Rubbermaid tote in it. I've mounted a spare tire under the trailer and plan to make a cooler rack for the tongue in the near future.

The picture was taken just before I finished the trailer. I welded uprights on either side and run a pipe through the wheel centers and the uprights. Works very well.

I found I needed the tires up front to get the proper 10% tongue weight.

Have a fabricator cut top of frame to allow tires to fit. File and tape the edges or they will cut your race rubber.
