First time at the track - Best 1/4 mile: 15.8 seconds? What's wrong with me?

I've been to LACR as well. That place STINKS! High elevation, uneven track which is not really all that flat, and slippery launchpad. And yes, you must correct the time yourself by .5 to 1 full second. That will be your actual 1/4 time at sea level. Your times are between 14.7-15 sec corrected which is not all that bad.
I only took my previous car, the 2000 Civic Si to LACR and the best I could pull off was 16.7 @87mph. Corrected for sea level, that translates to about 15.7-16.2 for my first time at any dragstrip.

those ARE some slow times....The S has a very hard time coming out of the hole and you really WILL have to launch at 7000+ in order to get out of the hole and get a descent 60ft time....as far as your trap speeds it does seem you are not hitting the mark either.....practice practice and practice some more

Yeah, I would say it's all in your 60' times. They should be around 2.0 or so, especially with some drag radials or R compound tires or something. Could be reaction time issues or launch problems. No reason why you can't be in the 14's, stock.

hmm when i draged at fontana, my best time was 15.1 at 94.66mph i got a 60 time in 2.444
i launched it at about 4000, but bogged a little very little. my firend told me that the reason that i was getting 15's was becasue i was power shifting at redline.
he said that the best thing to do is to find your poweband at each gear and shift at the peak power.
is this true. i know that when dynoing they say that peak HP is at 8500 but thats only first gear does anyone know what the peak is on all gears?
thanks for your reply

The engine doesn't change power based on the gear in use - it's strictly what the ECU is programmed to give. However, the rule of thumb is to shift where the torque curve is sloping down in the lower gear where it crosses going up in the higher gear. This will be above the torque peak unless gearing is really screwy. What you need is a torque curve for each gear so you can lay them over the others. Folks doing this for the S2K have already determined that the torque curves never overlap due to the unique characteristics of the VTEC system and the high revs used. The engine is pulling stronger at the max speed than it would be by shifting at a lower RPM. As such, shifting at the rev limiter (as opposed to redline) is recommended.

that doesn't sound right......i havn't ran the quarter, but i have ran the 1/8th....what i do is rev to about 4-5000rpm, then POP the clutch...i run a 9.1 at 80mph's on street tires. all i can say is practice makes perfect.
