Dunlop Star Spec tire wear question
Hello all,
My S2k is primarily an auto-x machine with a bit of daily driving. It is a STR work-in-progress, so only mod so far is wheels/tires 255/40/17 f/r (suspension will happen over the winter).
Alignment is:
Front:
1/8" total toe out
-1.8 camber
don't recall castor
Rear:
1/4" total toe in
-2.3 camber
I recently purchased a tire tread depth gauge and checked my front vs. rear tire tread depth. I measured down the middle of the tread for consistency. After 50 runs on small local courses the front read just below 8/32nds and the rear was about 7/32nds. Keeping in mind how I am told that the S2k is hard on rear tires, I was surprised at how close wear was. I thought it would be dramatically different. Just wondering if there is any information or implications I should glean from this or perhaps I am overthinking this.
To contrast, I started driving this car last summer and started on 225/50/16 Kumho XS which I obliterated on the rear. Likely attributable to poor driving after switching from 5 years of fwd.
All things being equal, if the f/r wear on the Star Specs is relatively close, does this possibly mean my driving has smoothed out? Should I be pushing harder resulting in more rear tire wear compared to the fronts? Or is this indicative of something else or nothing?

I find in autox that the wear is pretty close to even. The hard braking beats up the fronts while the acceleration beats up the rears, Ive actually been told by a few S2000 track guys that on the track the fronts wear out faster. So I think its pretty normal, or at least consistent with my experience w/ 255 dunlops all around

I wear out rears MUCH faster than fronts, but my driving style usually involves a little more rear slip angle than is optimal.
I've got fairly even wear on my STR tires so far but I've only done 3 events on them. Given the non-staggered tire sizes I plan to swap front-to-rear after every autocross to avoid the uneven wear/heat-cycling that I experienced with the Stock class setup.

I've been having problems with these tires chunking as of late. I am more than likely not going to be purchasing a set again. =/
Front tires were the victims of chunking - strangely not both, just 1. (This was on 2 different cars)

Front vs. rear wear is application and driver dependent.
When I started autocrossing I would use up the fronts faster than the rears. Used to go in fast and use the great turn in. Also rookie mistake of fast in slow out.
Now I definitely use the rears faster than the fronts. Little more aggressive and early on the gas for corner exits now.
IMHO, that's a lot of toe out and toe in. That kind of scrubbing is a big contributer to tire wear.

Rear 2-3x more wear in the starspecs. No way to wear the fronts faster or even.
I daily drive my car and do an average of 1 HPDE and 1-2 auto-x events per month. Im now on my 4th set of Dirrezzas. Every set Ive had the tire wear is almost even from front to rear.
It will all depend on your driving style, and how your car is set up.

For your front to wear at the same rate you have to understeer badly all the time or never use the throttle. So yes you can achieve that, but as a DD on my 5th set of tires, no way.
