Many (most?) race cars aren't street legal, if for no other reason they don't meet emissions and safety regulations. Driving an unregistered and uninsured car on the street exposes the driver to very severe penalties. People have lost race cars to theft and shop fires. Specific race car insurance is available.

If a race car remains street legal and is registered and insured it can be used on the street.

In NJ the fines can be $50-$200 plus the cost of towing and storing your vehicle. The charge is driving an unregistered vehicle and failure to present registration. You probably also won't have a valid inspection sticker. Other states are probably similar.

Mine is a track only car, and has been since HPDE days. No registration, or "street" insurance. However I have Storage, Transportation and Paddock insurance thru Lockton. Others offer the same. Good piece of mind

Back in 2012 I moved my full coverage policy with USAA to a "storage" policy and have kept it that way ever since, no issues. Its $60 every 6 months. Covers against theft and damage while parked/stored/in transit.

So it's comprehensive only and no collision...hmmm might have to get a price on that.

Not even that really as it doesn't cover any damage done to other vehicles either as it's not supposed to be driven on the roads. Only damage or theft during storage or transport.

Talked with Progressive. In the event I am towing and something happens to the S which is in tow (on a trailer), and it doesn't have it's own insurance, I'm SOL. Looks like I might be keeping insurance on it after all

Talked with my home owners insurance folks tonight. Let's say the roof caved in on my garage and my car wasn't insured, I'd be SOL there too. Damnit.

What was you objection to the Lockton policy that covers storage, transport, and paddock? I believe the same policy also covers trailer and tools. By the way, no auto policy covers vehicle contents (tools) in NC.
