What's the dash made of? What's underneath it?

I have a bracket I want to screw in to the dash, in the center, just to the left of the opening for the passenger air bag.

I assume the dash is actually some sort of plastic covered by that fake leather stuff? If I run some self-tapping screws into it, am I likely to do any damage other then to leave some holes in my dash?

its just plastic.
I don't know how much a self tapping screw would hold.
I would pop the air bag lid off and get a nut on the backside.
also the heater box is right under there

Air bag is still in there (even though it's no longer connected to anything).

I went ahead and just did it. Seems to have worked.

When I get around to it, I'll go ahead and pull the airbag.
