Default Car track day noob

Hi Everyone,

I just picked up my 02 S and want to get some track time in the Spring.

Summit Point is my local track, I would like to try Beaverun too. VIR is great, but the whole roll bar thing may keep me from going, until I am willing to add a bar.

I have been doing track days on my R6 for 2 years and want to try the car days out with FATT, NASA etc.

I was able to run 1:25's at Summit Point last bike outing in October, so I am familiar with the circuit at speed

Can someone help me out with what stuff I need to budget for?

Brake pads, new fluid etc. or maybe new brakes and rotors (Wildwood?)

Tires and wheels (maybe something I can drive to and fro the track with?)

Other stuff..?

I am just looking to have fun, and perfect my driving w/o spending too much. At 38 years old I have finally realized I don't have a shot at a F1 career.

Cheers,

George

I would spend some time reading the threads in this forum. Brakes, fluid, and tires are the 3 key elements people invest in. You'll find plenty of discussion of all of the above. I know a couple of threads have attempted to consolidate the info on brakes and fluids ... so you should have lots of information to absorb.

Get ready to have fun!!!

My thoughts on track day mods:

Casual Track Days, Novice Driver, Not pushing Car:
-> High air pressure in Stock S02's
-> Stock pads, rotors, *don't* push the late braking
-> Aggressive alignment
-> Work on smoothness

I wanna go faster track days:
-> High temp fluid, like Ate Super Blue
-> Higher temp street/track pads like R4S's. You can still cook these pads if your not careful, but they are fully streetable.
-> Stock tires, but you'll where them fast!
-> Stiffer front Sway bar, X-brace
-> Work on car control

I wanna go even faster track days:
-> Dedicated R-compound rubber on stock rims
-> Swap in dedicated track pads like Panther Plus
-> Coil-overs or stiffer springs
-> Lap timer
-> Work on consistancy

Of course, for safety at all levels, you should put in a full roll cage, 6 point harness, wear full face helmet, nomex suit...

Thanks for the info. It looks like I can get going relatively cheaply as first, Alignment, brake pads and fluid, x brace.

Can I use my Micron lap timer? It uses a infared beacon

Does the car tend to oversteer at the limit. hence the need for a stiffer front bar? Oversteer at corner entry?

The top part of this:

https://www.s2ki.com/forums/showthread.php?...&threadid=53865

has some general info on taking your S2000 to the track.

For poeple who've never been to the track and aren't sure they'll like it, I suggest just going totally stock; they usually don't push the braking hard enough to need anything more, and there's no point spending the money if they may not do it again.

In your case, it may be worthwhile to get some better brake fluid and pads.

Your infrared laptimer should work, if you can find a good place to mount it with a clear view. Some track events explicitly prohibit timing, though, so be aware of that.

Have fun!
