What about mixing Amsoil Synthetic 5W-30 and 10W-30? Same brand, same series of oil, but different cold weights.
I just completed an oil change with the last of my 5W-30 and I would like to switch to the 10W-30. My car burns very little oil, but I like to have some on hand to top off during every track day. Would it be okay to top off with 10W-30 (probably a half quart or less over 4-5 track days)? I'd prefer not to buy another quart of 5W-30 since most of it will be wasted when I switch.

Interesting answers! Well, it's not "totally" fine. Are you gonna grenade you engine? No....but....
Different brands and types of oils have different additive packages. Oil companies carefully design all the additives to work well with each other and with the base oil they are mixed with. It is "possible" to have undesirable side effects of these additives interacting with each other.
Certain oil "eggheads", such as Lake Speed, Jr. say never do it, not even with his own Joe Gibbs Driven oil. Most say do it if you have to to keep it from running low, but drain and refill as soon as possible.
Mixing syn and non syn is not an issue at all. Manufactures do it all the time. Mixing different weights in of itself is not "bad" for your engine either. It's all about the additives.
Think of the analogy of additives are like medications, mixing some produces some undesirable side effects.

But, considering I'm a doctor, I thought the medication analogy was pretty good!
