Budget friendly coilover system for the wannabe racer?
I go to the track about 6-8 times a year. My ap1 has 109k on stock suspension. Looking to upgrade and improve handling, but something like KW V3 are overkill for me and out of my budget. The car is mainly for the track. I will be going to a 17x9 square set up. Basically it's my track car, but I'm never going to get super serious about it...more of a weekend have fun racer with friends.

Withing budget...

If you're unwilling to spend at least that amount on coilovers, then don't bother. Almost coilover setup below $1200 will be a downgrade from the stock dampers.

You can probably get the Koni yellows with the Ground Control kit for +/- $1,000. It's supposed to be a nice upgrade from stock. Even better is that they are tried and true, quality parts. Do some searches in and out of this site and you will find that many people out there love this setup.

I am quite fast at my local track on the single adjustable buddy club race spec coilovers. They are consistent, simple to adjust and bullet proof. Ive clocked about 125k miles on mine so far, no rebuilds needed yet. I think msrp has come up a bit since I got mine like 7-8 years ago, but Ive seen some used sets rolling around the $800-$900 mark If i recall. New is around $1500-$1600 now I think. Considering the longevity ive got out of mine, I wouldn't hesitate to go used on these if they have no signs of weeping. I dont think your going to do much better then these in a single adjustable style coilover.
KW is bottom of the barrel as far as stepping into the double adjustables, and have proven to not have the longevity on their side, far more issues and rebuild frequency on these. Not that they are bad performers for what they do, i just see a bit more hype/popularity around these then are warranted I feel. If your budget minded, you should consider such things. At the same time you do need to hit a particular mark in how well the coilover functions to make it worthy above stock. I never cared much for the nervous under rebound dampened feel of the rear oem suspension, at least on the ap1. Almost anything with the right spring rate and damping adjustment range that works with that spring will be some improvement. But you have to spend a little to insure these provisions are accounted for.

So I have looked into the koni yellow with ground control, hks hypermax GT or the race version SP. I want to stick with name brand. Fortune Auto? I have read the thread on them, but don't want to deal with non name brand stuff. Just think companies like HKS and Koni have been around much longer so inherently think it will be better off.
