Did you not cut out the backing plate inside the flange?

Triple-H - I didn't cut the flanges or the dust shield anywhere. Everything actually fit pretty well as is.

The dust shield actually tapers slightly into those holes to direct air to them, so it will kinda act like a nozzle. The idea in theory is that a bigger hose will bring more volume of air and that will build up pressure at the dust shield and then the pressurized air will blow harder through the three holes. So - at least in theory - bigger hose will work better. But I don't think you can fit bigger than 2.5" without the tires rubbing on the hose at full lock.
