I'll do a full write-up later and post the link when it's done. For now, here are the pictures with captions to explain them a little...

Did you not cut out the backing plate inside the flange?

JDMwhore - from Wick's aircraft supply. http://www.wicksaircraft.com/gotopage.php?page=151

Triple-H - I didn't cut the flanges or the dust shield anywhere. Everything actually fit pretty well as is.

The dust shield actually tapers slightly into those holes to direct air to them, so it will kinda act like a nozzle. The idea in theory is that a bigger hose will bring more volume of air and that will build up pressure at the dust shield and then the pressurized air will blow harder through the three holes. So - at least in theory - bigger hose will work better. But I don't think you can fit bigger than 2.5" without the tires rubbing on the hose at full lock.

I hope so too. It looks as though the whole "nozzle" idea might actually work. I'm just hoping enough air volume will actually get through to make a difference.

BTW, I've been meaning to thank you for the Gear Calculator on your web page. It's been very useful
