I've been happy with the Azenis, Hankooks and S02's. The first two seemed much more resistant to chunking.
If you are a relative newcomer to autox, the tires won't make that much of a difference. Just get the cheapest set until you're ready for r's

Hey where is that National Champ tag for your sig? Your advice/recommendations will carry more clout if people know.

I just picked up some 205/225 RE-01Rs last week. I have a small autocross this weekend so I'll let you know how they compare to the horrible Kuhmo 712s that were on the car when I bought it.
I wish I could get the Neovas...my roommate has them on his M3 and I hate how soft the sidewalls of the RE-01Rs are compared to his Neovas.
I had Hankook Rs-2s on my last car ('91 BMW 318is) and they had great grip, very predictable but once again a soft sidewall.
I almost went with the S-02s but I thought the 7 year newer RE-01Rs would be better. I hope the side walls aren't too soft for autocrossing.

have you tried the Toyo T1-R's?
My small autocross went well, I placed first in my class, beating a supercharged '92 miata on Azenis, a stock rx-8 and an e36 M3 on Kuhmo MXs (I am completely stock on RE-01Rs). I know it doesn't mean much, driver skill has a lot to do with it. Unfortunately my roommate in his stock e36 M3 on Neovas couldn't come out for comparison.
I ran 33 psi cold for this autocross, I'll start from there. I had a decent amout of sidewall roll over, but not too much. It didn't over heat in the 40 sec course and it nicely grained the surface of the tire. The steady state grip is awesome, I think it's better than the hankooks, and I don't detect much oversteer at all with the 205/225 RE-01Rs. I had pretty bad oversteer on 205/245 Kuhmo 712s, I can't explain that, though. Maybe the rears were old and hard.
Overall the RE-01Rs work well, but I'd still like to experience the stiff sidewall of the s02 or Neova. I can detect some delay in the car taking a set in a corner...I don't know if it's the sidewall or that I am used to a stiffer, lighter car ('91 318is on race springs).

Has the RS2's in 225 for 83 a piece and the 245's are 96 a piece. Comes out to 358 plus shipping but we just have a local discount tire that sponsers the north texas s2000 club match that. With install, tax etc it comes out to around 450 out the door.

I forgot to say the rears don't last very long if you autocross though. I put a fresh set on in the beginning of June and it's now toward the end of October and they are toast. I'd say we did about 5 events on the car co-driven with 8 runs each so about 80 runs give or take plus 4000 miles of street driving.

Since you are starting out with full tread depth(11/32?), I would expect more life than that. We get that many runs out of the Kumho Ecsta V710. They start with 4/32" tread.
Sounds like you need to do a little adjustment - Front sway bar, adjustable shocks, air pressure, etc. We are running SCCA A Stock and currently have 96 runs on some Kumho V710s. We are using 225 all the way around since they do not make a 245 in the V710.
Tires are pretty evenly worn. Center of tread gone on rears and corners gone on fronts. We flippid them at 80 runs. Will probably run two more events on them. Two drivers, four runs each per event.
