Hmmm, Are these tires really that bad? Weren't there a bunch of people running the street tire classes at Nationals running these?

If you are going to be running a big front sway bar then running non staggered tires will completely work even with an agressive alignment.
I'm back to running the 710s in 225 all around and I've found them to be faster than the 225/265 combo becasue of better acceleration. Steve Wynveen took second at Nats this year on 245 hoosiers on all four corners. The road race guys have been running non-staggared for a while now. I think with some simple increased roll resistance on the front end of the car there is no need for a staggered set up.

Yes, they are that bad. To go with a completely stock ap1 would be on the order of 1-2 seconds faster. That's my personal experience.

The stock tire is an S02 not an S03. The S03 is not as fast... except for in the rain.
I've only run the S on one autocross event so far. I have a lot of setup to do for next season, just trying to plan it all now. I was shocked at the difference between the AP2 and my AP1. I could have gone about 1.5 seconds faster in a stock AP2 than my stock AP1 the way it's set up now. That sucks.
Gord has the Comptech FSB a pretty agressive alignment and V710's, and he was 5 seconds faster than me on a 75 second course.

The Bridgestone RE-01R is worth trying, if Matt has scared you away from the Hankooks. It sounds like Jeff likes them. They're rated by Tire Rack as just a hair lower performance than the Advan Neovas, which seems to come from a slightly slower response. Unfortunately the Neovas are not available in a 16" size that would work for the S2000.

I just picked up some 205/225 RE-01Rs last week. I have a small autocross this weekend so I'll let you know how they compare to the horrible Kuhmo 712s that were on the car when I bought it.
I wish I could get the Neovas...my roommate has them on his M3 and I hate how soft the sidewalls of the RE-01Rs are compared to his Neovas.
I had Hankook Rs-2s on my last car ('91 BMW 318is) and they had great grip, very predictable but once again a soft sidewall.
I almost went with the S-02s but I thought the 7 year newer RE-01Rs would be better. I hope the side walls aren't too soft for autocrossing.

Use the stock 225 S02s on front and rear and crank up the front sway bar stiffness. I think if you are looking for street tire performance this combo could not be beat. I may even do this the next time I buy street tires.

I've been happy with the Azenis, Hankooks and S02's. The first two seemed much more resistant to chunking.
If you are a relative newcomer to autox, the tires won't make that much of a difference. Just get the cheapest set until you're ready for r's
