Default Awsome 9 car comparo in March Road & Track

The 9 cars are C6 Corvette, Viper SRT-10, Lotus Elise, Mercedes SLK350, BMW Z4 3.0, Porsche Carrera S, Porsche Boxter S, Nissan 350Z and the S2000. The S2000 was buy far the least expensive car tested buy at least $5000. The S2000 came in 5th but easily could have come in 2nd if the testing hadn't been rigged. For instance, the S2000 got the best gas mileage by far, but points were awarded for EPA ratings not real world mileage. (what a bunch of crap) That alone would have put the S2000 in 4th.
One editor put the S2000 in first place. They also did a test that shows the S2000 had the best ride and settled fastest after a bump. Its a great article and should be read.

Seriously, should they be including gas mileage in a sports car comparison anyways?

interesting, i get much better milage in my Elise than i ever got in my S2000. A smaller lower output motor in a lighter car seems like it would obviously get better milage.

It was a good article. It was more of a pick of what the best "daily driver" would be with some occasional HPDE's and such.
Independent of price, the Boxster-S really seemed to be the winner. I believe 5 of 9 editors picked it. It had some pretty impressive performance figures.
The only nice thing they had to say about the AP2 was that it had "the best gearbox in the world". Too bad 2nd's only good for 58MPH.

Ken, want a co-driver for G.I.R.? I've been itching to see if the extra shifts are a detriment or not. We know the fatter Hoosiers give it some lateral grip...

I'm wondering if there will be a pretty even split of '00-'03's & '04-'05's in the trophies at Nationals.

I think that there will be more '00-'03 cars for no reason other than that fewer people are likely to invest in new S2000s now that they're no longer class overdogs. I imagine most of the people running S2000s in AS this year will be people who were running them in BS last year.

How can that be? We all know the S2000 has horrific bump steer characteristics...

I too read the article and thought it was great. Always nice to see the S2000 has not fallen off the radar screen for enthusiasts.

Interesting to see that the 350Z, which was a magazine darling at launch, fared poorly in the comparo and was described as the wrong car for hardcore enthusiasts. It was specifically criticized for its track handling.

Hi Todd,

It would be fun to have you co drive but I'm bringing my 16 year old son with me to co drive at GIR. He has never autocrossed before so I hope he has fun. Hope to see you there anyway.

I think Nissan/Infiniti did well to recruit Lotus to work on the suspension of their not yet released GT-R.
