Some drivers are just very good at both (as three of the top auto-x'ers in San Diego and Saini have proven repeatedly). I'm not even sure if they started out as auto-x'ers (maybe the Jasons?), or as trackers. But that should be expected I guess... if you're good at one you're likely to be good at the other (with enough seat time in each); if you're mediocre at one you're likely to be mediocre at the other. However, it's probably rare/unrealistic to be at the very top in both simultaneously as that usually demands specialization for consistency, as in any sport.

Not saying autocrossing is better than tracking (or road racing), but the opposite is no more true, and skills learned in one discipline apply to some extent to the others.
