Steve Hui (maintainer of the S2kI autocross FAQ) described an excellent method for determining the best tire pressures:

Start with some reasonable guess.

Take a run or two.

Raise or lower the pressure in the front tires.

Take a run or two.

How did the handling balance change?

If it understeered more, then your change was in the wrong direction. Try going the other way.

If it oversteered more, then you should keep going until you stop increasing the oversteer.

Do the same thing for the rear tires, except that oversteer=bad and understeer=keep going.

One thing I don't do any more is use a pyrometer. The last time I used it, it showed the center of the tire as being cooler than the edges even after adding over 10psi to the tires and slowing down my times about 2 seconds!

I assume you know about the chalk marking trick to get you in the ballpark.

yea I do, I've read to set the front and then adjust the back to balance out the car. anyone else do it this way?
