Default aluminium lug nuts

Hello all,

I just took off my 949 wheels and I noticed that the lugs were aluminium. The car is 90% track so my question is what should I look out for with them?

Im a noob when it comes to these but obviously avoid over torqueing them, but what about temperature? I typically check each lug after each session, any advice on do's or don'ts?

Thanks,

I've had some year-old lightweight aluminum lug nuts become bonded to steel wheel studs after a weekend of autocrossing. The lug nut threads were stripped when I took them off, and there were aluminum bits stuck between the steel stud threads. I had those wheel studs replaced by a shop (too painful to do it myself) and switched to steel lug nuts. I'm not saying all aluminum lug nuts will do this, but I didn't want to take that chance again.

How much/hard did you track the car?

the more important question is what kind of AL were the lugs made of? I doubt it would have been a problem with 7 series AL. duraluminum is a hardened type of aluminum due to aging and is only ~20% stronger than 7 series.

how many threads did you engage?

I bought the cheap ebay ones and a few got messed up and cross threaded fast so I bought another set and swap them out

Sometimes you can see the aluminium strip off a bit I don't worry too much about this now as long as they go on straight if they start to realy mess up I put a new one on

The main thing for me is they will strip out before the steel lugs

I torque them to around 80ft/lbs

messing around with greased threads is risky business. the change in the nut factor also differs by the type of grease used. for finer synthetic greases this factor can sink to 0.1, or a bit under.

Its a track car. Replace them. Do you want to throw away a day with a lost or sized nut?
