Aftermarket Roll Cages
hey guys,
I've heard that some of the aftermarket rollcages and not legal in the SCCA and other racing organizations. Which aftermarket cages are okay to run and which aren't?
Cusco? Safety 21? any bolt in cages?
Thanks!

The rules with the SCCA and NASA, both make the aftermarket cage illegal. The number of bends and the tube diameter both stick out as reasons why. Becasue of thier design to allow for the softop is why they have too many bends. To meet spec they would have to be made or a larger tubing diameter. However their diameter is already smaller than required.
If you are looking for a Roll Bar, you can go custom (have one made) or HardDog (http://www.bethania-garage.com) makes one, but it is not listed on their web site.

A cage is not necessary to run with NASA and probably SCCA. A rollbar, on the other hand, is required. As Jeff mentioned, Hard Dog makes a bar that is stout. If you do not plan on using your stock seatbelts after installing said rollbar, you may be able to buy a leftover GFL bar.

oh, ok I know that they aren't required on some track days, but I think I may want to add one before I go all out on a track. Just for personal safety reasons.

This is a discussion that we have on this board every month or so.
The bottom line is that there is no way to have an effective, safe, legal cage, and have the top still operate, and have the car safe for daily driving.
This is why I stopped tracking my S2000, and started racing a fully race-prepared car--I didn't want to convert my S2000 to a track-only car, but didn't feel safe with any compromise out there for my S2000 (either I wasn't effectively protected on the track, or I was in jeopardy on the street).
Everyone has their own level of comfort with various options. YMMV from mine.

These things are tradeoffs, not cut and dried absolutes. But I decided that for my roll bar I did want the extra design flexibility of not worrying about retaining the soft top or the OEM belts.
The downside is that my car has not been practical on the street since then.
To the OP: please read the many, many discussions on this topic. The people who know the most about this don't usually post answers to these questions, because theyhave posted those answers dozens of times before.

I stand by my statement.
I think that there is no way to have an effective, safe, legal cage (I said cage, not bar), have the top still operate, and have the car safe for daily driving. Heck, I don't even know that you can have a decent cage (to me, that requires, at a minimum, that it's welded in) and an operating soft top, period. A cage has bars all around you; get in an accident without racing gear on, and you might well have a split head, as well as various other broken parts. I consider that unsafe. I did say that YMMV.
