By the time the power from the engine makes it through the transmission, along the drive shaft, through the rear differential, through your wheels and tires, you lose about 15-18% of the power made at the crank shaft. Thats why people say RWHP = Rear Wheel Horse Power. Thats the number thats making it to the pavement which is what really matters.

Front engine, front wheel drive cars generally have less drivetrain loss, since the engine's crank isn't perpendicular with the drive wheels.
