Older model ecu on new s2k?
After doing much reading, I've found that the older ap1's ecu run alot richer then the newer ap1, as in 2003 model. So the older models will get a bigger gain from a vafc, over a newer model.
Could you use a 2000-2001 ecu in a 2002-2003 model? And tune it with a vafc and make more hp out of it?

no definitely stick with the 02-03 ECU. I don't know about 00-01 but the 02-03 still definitely runs rich. I had AFR's on a dyno chart somewhere it was in the 11's. Mine made about 10HP up top leaning it out with a VAFC.
I think the 02-03 map is better in other ways than 00-01 VTEC is smoother.

I think you're looking at it backwards. If you already have an '00-'01 ECU, then you can make big gains from a VAFC. However, if you have an '02-'03 ECU, the gains from a VAFC will be smaller.
Hypothetical scenario:
'00 S2000 & ECU = 195 HP
Same S2000 + VAFC = 210 HP
Gain from VAFC = 15 HP
'02 S2000 & ECU = 200 HP
Same S2000 + VAFC = 210 HP
Gain from VAFC = 10 HP

Ooooooo. So you would make the same power at the end but only because the older ap1 stock make less power then the newer ap1 and you can lean it out alittle more. But again. At the end of the day it comes out to the same.
So pretty much nothing changes on a 2000 and a 2003 except the ecu? As far as motor.

But if you have a lot of bolt on's with the newer computer, it'll actually run to lean(from what I've read). As you know, the VAFC can only pull fuel, not add. In this case, the older ECU would be a better match, sense the lean spots won't be as lean.
Also you can't change timing with a VAFC. Well you can indirectly. Just get an EMS and be done with it.

H22toF20 made a very good point. If you plan to install many "good" bolt-ons, you really need to stay away from the VAFC anyway. My post above was based on the fact that I assumed you were tuning a mostly stock car. If you plan to add a bunch of breater mods, go with something that can add fuel (GEMU, KPro, AEM, etc.)

So u cant pull timing with a vafc?
