Default New ECU

Hi Guys,

Looking into getting a new ECU (Think I have it narrowed down to AEM EMS or Hondata) but I'm still trying to get my head around a few things.

From what I have understood (and please correct me if I am wrong) there are quite reasonable gains to be had by getting a new ECU and having it suitably mapped.

I'm using my S2000 on the track as its near primary purpose, but just 'arrive and drive' track days at the moment opposed to as a race car.

I've seen pretty impressive gains from the various ECUs, but one thing that concerns me is that i see the odd comment around features being lost, like the water temperature guage not working on an AEM EMS unless you get a lead that only your brothers uncles best freinds nephews neighbours cats auntie can source for you... !

Not sure if this is an option, but one thing I would like to consider is a significantly lower VTEC engagement point, 4000 RPM to be precise, is this just too low, or is it achievable?

Appreciate if you guys could advise what you think on the issue, and more importantly, if you could advise me on the sort of gains I should expect.

My car is MY00 UKDM S2000, hope this helps.

The water temp is easy to fix: www.modifry.com.

You want to open the exhaust to use an aftermarket ECU. High-flow cat or decat and 70mm exhaust. If you don't open up the exhaust, you cannot lower VTEC as much. 4,000 RPM may be a little low with the stock header but you will get close. Lowering VTEC that much does not help a lot anyway. It helps a little but it's not a big change. Upper 4,000s is where the VTEC cam starts to outperform the lower cam.

Be aware that the Hondata will require you to change some other sensors in the engine.

Also, I'm not sure how many tuners you have in the UK who can do the mapping. I know many of the s2k guys in the UK have MASE fly over to do tunes a couple times a year.

sounds like the greddy ultimate may be the best way for you to go, based on you not mentioning anything crazy like ITBs or high HP FI application...

Mase has done crazy things with the emanage ultimate an on NA modded S...

why don't you look into DTA fast since it looks like you're located in England. It's a hassle to install but provides some good functionality like real time tuning. It seems as one of the more popular tuning solution in Europe and you are sure to get support since its is made in the UK.

I would stay ways from some of their older models, however.

You would find the most support for AEM on s2ki

just some things to consider with a track car are aftermarket gauges such as water temp, oil pressure/temp, and wideband A/F, click HERE for some good quality affordable accessories. For longevity of your engine the info given from these gauges will help. Wideband is mostly used during the tuning process.
