Default Saris Bones 1 Bike Carrier

A Saris Bones 1 bike carrier is significantly cheaper than a Saris Bones 2, and I only need to carry one bike.

Has anyone fitted one? To me, it looks like the arms are too short for the bike (especially the pedal) to clear the bumper.

It's only £40, so if there is a chance it might fit I'll go buy one and test it out. I can always return it.

Thanks

I used the Bones 2 on the S with a Giant 29er hard-tail, and it cleared fairly well with the bike as far from the car as possible; any closer and it would have been hitting the trunk, though. In fact, I actually had the pedal scratch the top of my rear bumper and it needed to be touched up afterwards. If you are hauling a road bike and are clipped in, you probably wouldn't have that problem.

I'd be carrying a Giant Trance with Shimano M530 MTB SPD pedals, so only about 25% smaller than flats. The bike has 26" wheels but I would have the wheels standing up in the passenger seat, so I'd just be carrying the frame with the rack.

Thanks for the reply, it sounds like a Bones 1 is too close. I wish there were some dimensions of it somewhere, then I could make a 1:1 scale thing out of card to check the clearance.

If you weren't across the pond, I'd sell you my Bones 2! I've since picked up a Thule rack and a Specialized Stumpy FSR 29er. Love it! Props to a fellow MTBer!

Don't do it. The S rear bumper is shallow. I had this before and stopped using it. Just not very safe. I went with a chase racing hitch instead.

Note: Chase hitch only works with stock or other SPECIFIC exhausts. Check before buying.
