Just get the stage 1 fullblown kit. Its only 3g's for a quality built kit with good parts. Lots of people will tell you that the low cost turbo's are complete garbage. Most are, but there are lots of inexpensive journal bearing turbo's out there that will work just fine for far less than 1k dollars. The T series journal bearing garretts, journal precisions, journal turbonetics, and some of the higher quality knockoffs like godspeed stuff will all make plenty of power and be just as reliable as the big dollar ball bearing units. Are they better sure, but think of it this way, you can buy one gtx35r for 2k or four 60-1's. Both will make 500hp and be reliable. The gtx just does it more efficiently and will spool a little quicker. For standard daily use, there's just not really a need for that kind of expense. For a track or race car, yes. For a street car thats really not in boost that often anyway, not really. Spend the money on your fuel system, guages, heat sheilding, etc. These are much more important than the 400rpm faster the big dollar turbo spools at. A quality manifold and supporting parts are FAR more important than having the latest billet ball bearing bling turbo.
