Lol @ physics classes. How could u NOT see the potential for compression. They're not pulling straight back. They'd be pulling backwards AND down since they're mounted on the lower seat bolts.
When u tighten them, I know u feel urself getting crushed into the seat as well as being pulled back. Think about it.
I've taken a few physics classes, but it takes 0 classes for common sense.

the sub belt keeps you from slipping under the shoulder/waist belts when in a crash.
although im a huge fan of the schroth (sp) ASM cartridge to let you have a little "give" during a crash.

I think a simple experiment with a rubber band will exhibit what everyone is saying. If you cut it and tape one end to a table and tape the other end to the table about an inch apart forming a upside down "U", you basically have your setup. Now, let's say you just rear ended another car. Your momentum will move you forward in the seat. Now to mimic that with the rubber band, slide your fingers under the "U" and move them forward. You will notice the overall height of the "U" has gone down and you should feel a compression force on your top finger. That's your spine compressing.
Now take the same rubber band and a book, about the same height as your fingers. Tape one end on the table and the other end at the top of the book. That's the correct set up everyone is urging you to get done. Now slide your fingers under and do it again. You will notice there is no compression force on the top of your finger.
