Default DIY: Painting your wheels with PICS

Some of you might like the stock silver wheels, I myself like a glossy black finish. Here is a DIY I made because I couldn't find a good one with pics.

Tools needed:
Jack and Jack Stands
Breaker Bar and 19mm socket optional (stock tools to take off your wheels work too.)
Bucket of soap and a sponge
Newspaper
320 grit sand paper
Blue painters masking tape(this project took 2 rolls)
2 cans of Auto Primer
3 cans of paint(color of your choice of course) Any paint that will stick to metal will work, I happened to find wheel paint.
3 cans of wheel clear coat
and the most important tool you can use in this project a RESPIRATOR(MASK)
-First jack up your car and put jack stands under a secure place.

-Second take off the wheels and clean them
-Next LIGHTLY sand the wheels, then clean them again to get the dust off from sanding them.
-Protect your car from over spray.

-Then mask off the tires to protect them from over spray.
-Next apply the first coat of primer and apply the second coat 1hr after the first coat.

-After the primer dries apply the first coat of color. I applied 3 coats the next heavier than the last.

-Finally apply the 3 coats of clear coat. 2 light coats, then 1 medium to heavy coat.
* It should look like this when every thing is finished *

I will post pics up when I get done with all 4 wheels and get them on the car

nice job, looks great. I've done the same before, and the biggest problem I've encountered is that the paint (even with multiple coats of clear-coat) chip very easily. Whether it's from rock chips or accidentally grazing it with a socket wrench when removing the wheels in the future, the paint was not strong enough to take the abuse.

Hope it works out for you.

I think that has more to do with adhesion then paint strength.

Yeah thats more of an adhesion problem. The trick is to let the paint dry, not just to the touch but to actually settle. It takes automotive paint, and correct me if im wrong, 7 days or so to actually cure. So if it were me I wouldn't drive it for a week after painting so that the paint will cure before exposing it to the elements.

And no my wheels did not have any kind of plastic film, it was just metal all around.

Awesome DIY.
I am going to start mine over July 4th weekend. Also install my Eibach Pro kit and tint my clear side markers.
Looking forward to seeing your Black rims.
I am degreasing/sanding/sanding-grinding my road rash/cleaning again/cleaning again/painting with Duplicolor Satin Black/no primer/clear coat.
I have ap2 wheels on my ssm ap2.
I will try and do a DIY as well.
Regards,
pwcfan
