Yes you have to cut either of them off and replace the missing sections with new piping.

Also remember if you remove the catalytic converter, over time the rear bumper will get black from the soot. It's VERY hard to remove unless you want to clay the car all the time.

cut the resonator BOX off for deeper sound. i've read removing the resonator penis will result in raspyness galore

i cut out the box and i am enjoying it. best 35 bucks i've ever spent

or you could just buy a berlina and not have to worry about the soot showing up too much

I did this before getting an exhaust. Worth it of you can have a place do it for a few bucks. It's not very dramatic, just a bit deeper. I noticed it most at idle.

Chop the resonator box near the rear of the car. It gives a great sound from the 4-5k range. Though raspy when the pipes are cold, it sounds great when the car is warmed up!

Not a bad mod for $20.
