Some people love driving with 4.77s but some dont depends what kind of driving he does. 4.44s or 4.56s would probably be better

I have a 4.56 built by Puddy and it's freakin' awesome. To me this is the gearing the car should have had, but I think Honda decided against it because 4.5s tend to whine.

Your friend needs to decide if he's going to mod the car in the future. Being on this site and asking a question about gears, make me asume yes. A higher ratio is better for NA and the 4.10 is good with FI. I am an oddity and have a SC and a 4.56.

You should place a post in your local forum and ask if someone will give you a ride to see the various gears. IMO Richmond makes the best and if you need one built or just advice, contact Puddy. He's a super nice guy and really knows his stuff.

He should stay away from the 4.77. With a 4.56, I am in second gear as I go through the intersection from a stop. With a 4.77, he'll be in third gear before he gets through the light.

With a SC or a turbo, the car will spool up so fast that he won't appreciate it. Think of it like this. a 4.10 is longer gears and a SC allows you to roll through those gears faster because it spools quicker. A 4.56 is shorter and 4.77 are really short. On a regular S these gears allow for a lot of zip off the line and makes the car feel really fiesty. But if you're looking to go 0-60 in under 4.2, you don't ant to be changing gears five times.

Pros - more agressive off the line and really fun to play with ( a definate must but only after you have had the car for at least a year...this way you really appreciate the change)

Cons - you shift more often and loose top end speed (but do you really need to drive 140+ or is 90+ good enough) the 4.56 or 4.57 will whine and you may find yourself getting dynamat or quietcar to reduce the sound.

theres an official gears thread ... and you can still close in on 140 with 4.7s in an AP1
