It used to be CA smog legal. I think I have a carb # on mine. but i put the oem cat back on for a recent smog check just to be safe. tech specifically told me that i had to have my oem cat.

i went to a smog place that didnt necessarily look under the car when i was running the berk hfc but it didnt pass emissions
so i threw an oem cat on and called it a day
lost A LOT of power though (as far as my butt dyno was concerned)

if you want a test pipe or HFC to pass a visual inspection by the cop on the side of the road, just weld the cat heat shields on.
As far as fooling BAR, you can't, they are the smog experts.
A regular smog tech can be fooled visually, however by all accounts that i've read, the berk HFC doesn't pass the sniffer anyway.
I don't know of any HFC that is currently smog legal (some were in the past).
Sooooo, if you get one, just swap it out when it comes time to smog.

DIY. There is mention of a O2 sensor socket, Pepboys carries those, I bought one so I could torque O2 sensor to spec...a torque wrench would be good to have. The (00-03) Service Manual page 9-4 shows all the torque settings for the bolts.

Unless he happens to be in the military, then he is protected by SSRA, and doesn't need to change his tag or make his car conform to each state he moves to's standards

The beauty of having my car still registered in PA. I don't have to worry about smog here in San Diego . Not to sound dumb, but what's stopping you from just putting on the stock cat whenever you have to get smogged?

@Shiftat9 Remove 6 bolts, put on new gaskets/tp, tighten six bolts. The real difficulty for doing it alone is just having the room to do it, or the proper setup to get it high enough, and safe. It's about as straight forward as pouring cereal.

Also, was your car already tuned when u have your HFC on?
I would assume going back to OEM would affect performance after a tune?
