I bought an used s2000 from a honda dealer in august it came with some mods(coilover,intake) and I think it might have some gears is there anyway I can tell without pulling anything apart?

compare / calculate the rpm and mph @ each gear

post your max speed in each gear

If you have an ap1 with stock wheels you should be turning 4500rpm in 5th gear at 65mph.

yeah have him bang on the rev limiter for a few seconds to make sure he's really tapping out the revs...

does the rear make a slight whining sound? most aftermarket gears out there make a distinct whine. some ever so slightly

I tried what negcamber told me to do I have stock wheels and at 65mph im at around 4.1k-4.2k rpm and yes the back does make somewhat of a whining sound ^

^the top speed W. gears will ONLY work if you have a speedo calibration. if you dont the speedo will just give you the wrong speed

idk if you can do it on the S since it has IRS, but if you spin the diff and count the rotation of the tires you'll have a good idea. (it worked on my solid axle camaro).

look at the tranny and see if there is any wires spliced into the speed sensor. If so you most likely have aftermarket gears with a speed calibrator. Look at the diff itself to see if it looks like it has been opened before. Same with the driveshaft/propeller shaft. Look for tampered bolts.

****If you don't have a speed calibrator installed****
If you have a friend who has a stock vehicle and match speeds on freeway. Do you have a GPS? If so use that and try to check actual speed versus your dash read out.

You can try the one tire rotation compared to driveshaft rotations also like mentioned above. This only give you an estimate. Gears come in 4.10, 4.30, 4.40, 4.44, 4.56, 4.57, 4.77 ratios

Other than that you have to take the diff out and count teeth.
