Mr. cthree,

I ran about 10 hard track days, including two at spring mt. on a set of RA-1s. They're cheaper, stickier, and may even end up lasting longer (as unlikely as that may seem) than S02s.

You decided, all of a sudden, to be the best S2000 driver in the Challenge. Given that, I think you better bring your ass (and your car) out to Spring Mt. with those RA1s. I'm sure they'll get you through that event and Nationals, and maybe other events.

BTW, I'm only being half way facetious about you being the best driver. Your times at Sears were amazing with street tires and I truly feel threatened by the thought of you putting on some track tires. I'm scared. Seriously I think you would have beaten me and Hayashi on track tires. But, sorry, you wouldn't have beaten Bob.

What else can I say to badger you into coming? Let me know.

red,

i'd say they're more race tires than street tires; they handle like race tires. they start out with a nice chunk of tread but that goes away pretty quickly and you end up with slicks.

so for rain they're only good when they're new. if a cop pulls you over when they're in their bald mode you'll get a fix-it ticket which is easy to deal with. they'll hydroplane in the rain, so you'll have to drive around carefully on them if you get stuck in a shower.

cthree somehow manages to tear up a set of S02's in two days, and maybe he'd do the same with ra1's, but I doubt it. They probably hold up to extreme track conditions better, though they should wear out faster in daily driving.

they're awfully fun to drive on.

dt,

Don't worry about my pre match shit talking. I'm just getting things hyped up. But I will beat you haha

red,

Toyo Proxies RA1's are DOT approved race tires similar to Yoko AO32R's and Khumo Victoracers. A Hybred street/track tire if you like. Not quite a Hoosier but they are drivable on the street (forget doing that with Hoosiers).

I found that at Sears Point I burned through a new set of S02s in just two track days. The S02 doesn't stand up to the heat and extreme wear when you drive like nuts on the track. After the second day my tires were shreaded and driving home that loose rubber wore off leaving a basically bald tire (down to the wear bars). Mind you I was a bit insane at SP and I don't expect that you'll go through them that fast. I was only a couple of seconds off the pace of the race tire class (1:58 vs 2:01) and you could say that for some reason I had balls of steel. I even spun out in the 105 MPH sweeper twice the second time backing into a tire wall. No damage and I went on to clock my best time of the day in the following rungroup. I don't know what came over me BTW doing 360's at 100 MPH in close proximity to a wall is an interesting experience Doug was the only one brave enough to ride with me, everyone else said no F'ing way

See ya at Spring Mountain!

Something was definately very wrong with cthree that day. I actually saw him chewing on his tires in the paddock between run sessions. I look forward to seeing that monster again.

How do brand-new S02's work out on the track? Are they less grippy when new than they are worn down?

I think our current rear S02's will survive both days at Spring Mtn (the outer tread is still great, the inner tread is more worn, but the outer takes more wear on the track because of cornering, right?), but the hubby is going to a NASA event on June 8/9 and we were planning to get new rear S02s after Spring Mtn.
