Dromo One Experience - WOW
#1
Thanks to Kuni's thread about Dromo One, my family went there this afternoon to celebrate my younger son's eighteenth birthday.
What a fun time! There were six of us, and we enjoyed the first race so much that we re-upped for a second. (Alas, my son's two friends had to leave and they were running late, so only four of us got two runs.)
My best lap on the first race was 26.9 sec and 26.2 on the second race. I qualified fourth in the first race and finished in the same position. (I didn't realize that you have to STAND on the gas to get started, so I lost two positions at the start and had to overtake them later!) In the second race I qualified third and finished in the same position.
The only complaint was against a driver in a black, white and fluorescent orange (my wife says pink) helmet with a South Park sticker on the back. Several times he cut me off, and he bumped my older son so many times that my son was black flagged. (At least we got a coupon for a free race as compensation.) In the next race he bumped another driver several times and got him to leave the race. It wasn't till we made the marshals aware of his tactics that in his third race they finally black flagged him. A race later one of the other racers appeared to take matters into his own hands and ran this guy into the tires.
I hope that none of the other s2ki drivers had the misfortune to share the track with this guy. The manager there told the guy at the front desk to note his name in the computer, but I believe that he should have been removed from the premises.
It was great to meet kuni, vtecvoodoo, and SteveUCI, and to see MarkS2K again, and to see a half-dozen S2000s in the parking lot. (Did anyone else see the 550 Spyder parked out front? Gorgeous!) I'm looking forward to the next S2000 event there!

It's good you could enjoy the experience even after having had the "South Park" driver's 'tactics' in evidence, particularly with your son. Probably would have spoiled it for me, and is the reason I enjoy the Grand Prix type of driving experience at SpeedZone; just me and the track, but not quite the 'racing' type of experience at Dromo One, I'm sure.

Hey Magician, great to meet you and I'm sure Dromo 1 for your son's bday was the right idea!! However, I'm really sad to hear about that guy -- I was casually watching races today every now and then and I DID notice that guy really being pathetically rude on the track, making no attempt to avoid other cars at the end of the straightaway etc....
Just as an FYI in defense of Dromo 1, out of the now 5 times I've run at Dromo 1, I've never seen anyone bump someone else except for that guy.
See you again sometime!
(By the way, there are some videos of today's Dromo 1 event up at http://www.motive-force.com)

hehe, crap like that always happens. You think the underpayed employee's always keep a track on things? Sometimes, the wrong cars get shut-off for "bumping" and other times the right ones get shut off. The fact is, if someone is a complete dick, let them go by. I learned that the hard way after getting stuffed more than one time by not letting an angry stupid guy by. It's more fun "drafting" them and see their god-awful line and terrible mistakes. Ever since they changed the first turn, it makes things a lot more interesting over there.

As always nice Videos I want to go back to the track again!!! Gotta show Tommy how it's really done, especially GTR Power(Nick) who came all the way from Chicago just to smell my exhaust fumes for 5 laps.hehehe
Helen took some nice shots of you, I'll try to send them to your email..
Not sure how to post pics on this thread but I'll try to post them ASAP.

One of the girls who came with us said that her family owns a kart racing team. Real, outdoor fast-as-all-getout karts. She said that they use basically the same chassis as the Dromo One karts with rather more powerful engines. They'll do 130. Miles-per-hour!
I think I'd like to try that once. Exactly once. No more, no less.
