Default Seat repair adventure

Like most here, my driver’s side leg bolster could use some bolstering. Beyond the normal tear that comes with careless entry and exit… the left rail that the hog rings snap to has ripped free of the foam.

I’m gonna give 3M Foam Fast Orange 74 a try. I’m pretty certain I can reglue the torn areas and regain most of the original shape. After that, I’ll need to fill in small sections, and then hopefully reinforce the whole area with some sort of fabric… not yet sure what to use there.

Any suggestions are appreciated

A step in the right direction... the hog ring rail is firmly back in place. The split in the bolster has been re-glued as well, which gave the bolster its height back. I added some upholstery foam to fill the remaining cavity, but I should have used a higher density foam. I ordered some higher density automotive foam to replace that and some other weak sections.

Nice job! You satisfied with how that 3m fast orange worked out?

Yeah, it’s interesting stuff. It sprays very similarly to other 3M spray adhesives, in a thick vertical line spray pattern. I found myself spraying a “test shot” before each application to get a feel for the trajectory. It’s very wet at first and requires time to get tacky before the 2 pieces should be joined. Once dry, it is strong and has a stretchy rubbery quality to it when you pull the joint. It definitely feels like the surrounding foam will give up before the adhesive.

I did this a few years ago when I got my car, I also picked up another set of project seats yesterday so I will be doing it again.....

I used high density cushion foam and filled the split and cavity, not pictured is when I used a burlap fabric type thing and spray adhesive overtop the the repaired section to help it hold its shape and prevent it from breaking down. it's still holding up pretty well years later.

Did the spray foam work well? is it rigid after curing or does it have some flex? I may try that for my new set of seats if that worked out well for you.

That looks good, TheBasedDoge. The 3M Fast foam adhesive didn’t firm up. It became stretchy so the foam still has the ‘give’ you’d expect after repair. The bond is really strong though. My original leather is pretty dry and tired, so I placed an order with leatherseats.com. In the meantime, I’ve been driving on the bare foam base. It’s nice to have that left leg support again.

Awesome, I will look into the 3M foam for the next set I repair.

I'm also looking for a new set of leather skins, I just posted another thread with all the options i've compiled, there seem to be quite a few

I tried Katzkin at first. I'm not impressed with their customer service. (Spoiler: they only have templates for 00-05). I have an '06. Their site actually doesn't list the S2000 at all. So I reached out with my vehicle specifics and their rep assured me they could help. Included in the Katzkin pricing, they send the seats to a local upholsterer to do the final install. I asked who they would use in San Antonio and she assured me it was a good shop, but didn't give a name. Perhaps that's to prevent their customers from going direct to the upholsterer for everything.? Anyway, after all the questions, pricing details, and learning about their process, I followed up to place an order... and then she realized they don't offer anything for '06+. Womp womp...

So far, leatherseats.com has been a much better experience. Their email responses were quick (although not always from the same person). I placed the order in the evening last week and got a call the next morning to confirm all the details. In addition to being familiar with all the questions I had asked previously, that rep actually knew the S2k MY differences off the top of his head (including that 08-09 seats are taller than 06-07). I got some good install tips as well. I'll post my thoughts (and photos) when the covers arrive.

I noticed also that Katzkin doesn't list s2000 on their site, I thought that was weird. What is the lead time for the leatherseats.com covers? I will probably just wait for your impressions and photos before I order anything
