Default Roll hoop cover - splitting?

Sometime in the last week, the roll bar cover on my passenger side (MY04) has started coming apart; the front and back plastic pieces are detaching from each other. The car has not been in any serious fender bender, and hasn't seen anything other than highway driving the last few months, so this was a surprise. It looks like the two pieces are attached together with some plastic clips and possibly some glue; the clips appear broken/snapped and the glue worn off.

Any ideas? Has anyone else experienced this? My local body shop (they do great work, I trust them with the S) is looking into fixing this but no quote yet.

Did you buy your car used? Hard your soft top replaced? Some installers when installing a new soft top will separate the roll hoops. However once separated the hoops can never be put back together. No amount for glue or adhesive will keep it together forever, when it is exposed to heat etc...it will start to separate again. The only way to permanently fix this would be to get a used set of roll hoops that have never been separated and replace yours.

I am no expert but I am not sure I agree with that statement. As far as I can tell the roll hoop covers have to be separated in order to be installed. The roll bar they are covering is one piece so the plastic pieces have to snap/glue/fasten together around the metal roll bar.

Buying a used set would still require them to be removed from the old car which means that would have to be separated and then fastened together again.

I would check out this link for the actual plastic pieces as well as the various fasteners and bolts:

I even pulled up the 2004 MY since your info says you have an 04 Hope this helps!

I believe you can unbolt the the roll hoop cover and all from the car. Also there is no way you can glue it back together or fasten it back together...over time and heat it will separate again. Its been discussed before on the process that Honda uses to basically fuse the piece together during assembly.

I installed my soft top and failed to read the proper installation instructions and I ended up seperating the hoops. They are sealed really well and I don't think they will come apart unless they were split prior like said before.

Easy way to determine if they were sealed back together would be traces of adhesive or sealant on the inside of the plastic. Honda doesn't use any adhesive or clips to put them together. The inside of the hope edge has a thin wire and it seems like they fuse them together using high heat.

The proper way of replacing the hoops is removing the entire roll bar with hoops attached. The roll bar is bolted to the body using 3 or 4 bolts. Only way I know of getting them back together is buying the entire roll bar with plastic hoop still on it as previously mentioned.

As for me I'm still waiting for someone to sell theirs but they don't come up on the sales forum often expecially the red ones that I need

Kid that had my car before my seperated the old hoops to get to the seatbelts..

But there is only four bolts holding the roll bars on the car, once you get the glovebox out it's pretty easy to take them out, almost like a puzzle really.

I ended up finding a set that wasn't seperated (they were red too, which worked out okay) and getting them shipped from cali, ended up being a priceless $90 fix!

Roll hoops do NOT need to be seperated to remove/ install them, replace the soft top, or anything else. If they are seperated then somebody dosnt know what they are doing and now they are broken and like mentioned before, glue will not hold them together.

Twelve years after the question was raised, I'll add my two cents. I just bought an '04 and inherited that problem. I had read that silicone worked, but even after setting for three weeks, a few hours in the sun and the halves separated again after I'd removed the black wire ties that were holding the halves together. I reinstalled the black wire ties and will probably leave it like that, but I can't help but think that if I remove as much of the silicone as I can and re-glue with a chemically setting glue, that it will work. I have one product, Strongstik, a DAP product from Home Depot that says, "Water cleanup." I bet it would work.

If any type of adhesive would work iwould try 3m panel bond. May not stick to that plastic but it can hold a quarter panel on a car. Also check out 3m plastic repair products, they work pretty well for putting bumpers back together.

My roll hoops were splitting when I brought my car, as a temp fix I used a black zip/cable tie on each one to hold it together.

It doesnt look perfect but it holds them together and stops the rattle that had developed from them!
