many of our most famous pictures depict tragedy. the happy go lucky ones rarely stick in our minds.
the more emotional response we give the image the more rememorable it is to us.
Sad but true.
it works the other way too. if we see a happy picture, and it evokes a response from us emotionally, we are more apt to remember it.
