Fed up with the coating flaking off my shifter surround trim, I decided to let her have it with a little 70% rubbing alcohol. After a some vigorous rubbing, I'm very pleased with the results!
One thing to note is that the resulting finish has a really nice dark tint to it - kinda like a black chrome finish. I found the perfect shift knob to match - a RAZO 340R shift knob. Folks, this is the heaviest (at least I think it is) knob on the market! Compare the weight (340g) with the various magnum knobs on the market which weigh a measly 240-280g
The shifter now feels "like buttah!" I made a slight mod (chopped it in half) to the mounting insert to competely
counter-sink the knob.
I think the new shift knob matches the trim ring color perfectly. It even matches the button at the end of the parking brake The knob looks black in the pictures (sorry for the crappy quality, but you try and take pictures in a dark garage!) but is actually black chrome. The best part is that the shift knob comes with a 6-speed shift pattern sticker that depicts the factory shift pattern (you can sort of see on the radio door). Valets and friends will know how to find reverse. The RAZO knob is made in Japan, just like like my S2K!

Just to let you know I did that about a year ago and found out the hard way that its not worth it. Mine has already cracked and started to flake. Its flat black underneath that. I am ordering a new one ASAP. The sun speeds the process so dont leave it out in the sun. It will soon bubble and then start to crack.
