IMO, I believe that the HDR technique should be used only in certain situations when the available lighting, backgrounds, and object(s) are in all "fitting." It's hard to describe what exactly I mean by that... just as when a photographer thinks a certain shot is taken at the right time, location, angle, etc etc. But examples of suitable conditions for using HDR: shooting an object against the light - sun/spotlight, and in extremely poor or low ambient lighting.
I find it almost annoying (no offense to anyone) that it's been so overly used in just your day-to-day photos. While the resulting effects certainly are unlike anything you'd get in a regular shot, it doesn't serve the purpose of an HDRI to begin with.
Sorry for the small rant.

Due to its novelty, HDR is overused and often exagerated, with a result best described as weird.

Anyway, some HDRs are less extreme than others, but that doesn't mean they aren't HDRs... it's all in how you tonemap the photo. IMO the best HDRs are subtle.
While HDR doesn't always make that much more out of a "day-to-day shot", it can still add a little more color or pizzaz to a pic that might not have as much going for it as-is. Just like any kind of art, beauty is in the eye of the beholder, and everyone has different tastes. I personally hate all the pictures people take of cars that are at crazy angles or barely show any of the car. I just want to see the damn car easily!
Anywho, some very nice pics here everyone, keep 'em coming!

Looks like there's a little haloing around the car. I'm still trying to figure out how to fix that.
