If you want to adjust the background and not affect the focal point (the car), duplicate a layer, make the adjustments on the background, then dodge/burn (or use the erase tool) and the car will be back in the original form. Then you can add another layer and make adjustments to the vehicle and dodge/burn (or erase) the changes made to the background.
