Plug kit is not going to do you any favors with a hole in the sidewall. Just speaking from personal experience. On long drives I'd definitely want the spare.

i have AAA too, and while my S is not my daily, i roadtrip it often. keeping my spare. i just had a slight mishap a couple weeks ago while driving to LA from SF. my newly refinished, 3 piece, HRE wheel sprung a leak, due to a bad seal. luckily, i had my spare. a can of Fix-A-Flat or compressor (had one) wouldn't have done me any good. 30 lbs weight savings isn't worth a whole lot, unless it's on the track.

I was over 100 miles from anyone who could have replaced the tire that weekend. AAA would have cost me additional money and time (I have it in addition to the spare).
