How secure is the battery? Would you trust using the mount on it's side?

it's very secure. The battery is held in precisely by the machined tie down and the battery sits in a recessed area in the tray. The tray is bolted down in the OEM location. If you mounted it on it's side, you'd have to figure out some type of custom mount since this tray is specifically for the OEM position, but yes i would trust it on it's side if done right. Getting ready to do all my brakes shortly. Going to put on some much lower mileage calipers as well and hopefully get my brakes feel a good bit better than they do now!
