It's a shift collar. On the end of the shifter, there's a plastic collar bushing that slips into a ring to interface with the transmission. Being plastic, it's already somewhat flexible, but it can worsen over time due to use and age. You replace it with this metal one and you get much better shifts that are smoother and more precise.

However long it takes you to pull your shifter. It took me about 30-45 minutes to remove and reinstall because I had never done it before.

Remove the shift knob, center console, remove the foam insulation surround, take off the inner shift boot and plastic collar (takes a bit of prying with a flathead screwdriver to release the clips), pull C boot (covers the bolts), unbolt the shifter and lift it out. Pull the factory shift collar off, wipe off older high temp grease, re-grease all moving parts (Honda Urea is about $22, I just used hi-temp moly at about 18% the cost), put the new collar on (really easy) and grease it too.

During the reinstall make sure to line up the "wings" of the ball lever seat with the shifter housing and guide the shift collar into the B shift arm otherwise it won't seat properly. I just takes some adjustment of the shifter position as you reinstall it. Bolts are 7.X ft/lbs if I remember right, it's in the service manual.

S2K4life_AZ has a good write up on it here: https://www.s2ki.com/s2000/topic/103...-collar-piece/

I am interested in that. My shifter still feels good, but it would be one that shouldn't fail. Maybe I'll do one this year.

Could you explain what you mean by "line up the "wings" of the ball lever seat with the shifter housing"? What's a "B shift arm"?

I was using some of the names from the parts list on the page as I don't know if they have "official" names other than the parts description. If you look at the diagram you can just barely see two tabs that come off the sides of the shift ball beneath the level base plate. They slide into the tracks on the ball seat to to help keep the lever from rotating in place which would misalign the shifter. There's notches in the shifter base that those slide into to orient the shift lever in the right direction. Those are what I meant by "wings".

The B shift arm is part #5 in the diagram here: http://www.hondaautomotiveparts.com/...5=MT+SHIFT+ARM That is what the shift collar seats into and manipulate the shift rod to select the desired gear. If you look at the photos S2K4life_AZ posted in that thread https://www.s2ki.com/s2000/topic/103...t__p__22994192 you can get a better idea of what I'm talking about.

Though if anyone has anymore related questions, please shoot me a PM as I don't want to derail the thread. Thanks!
