ap2 probably an 04-05 would be BEST for you since you want lower price as well as 06+ are a little harder to mod
I've had both an ap1 and an ap2 and have had FI, if I could do it all over again I would go with an ap2 because of all the minor updates and fixes, new headlight/taillight design with glass convert (can find this on 02+ but anyway) along with other interior/exterior bumpers, console etc changes
I went with an 07 the second time around because I fell in love with the laguna blue pearl which is only offered 06+

Imo:
AP1 - all about the 9000rpm redline, and really not much else
AP2 - much more refined in every aspect, but the missing 800rpm + shorter gearing can make your car get trapped in some funny situations on the track
If you ask me, the torque isn't THAT big of a deal. In fact, the increased torque probably has less to do with the actual displacement itself. Honda managed to did a pretty good job on the F20c in 2004 to fix that issue in markets that still offered the 2.0L engines.
Of course, with AP2 ... you need to throw in the DBW as part of the equation
Anyway, that's just purely my opinion ... not trying to start AP1 vs AP2 thread here. I drive an AP2 for the most part, so my thoughts are biased
