Because I didn't run the extensions for the bumper supplied by the authentic j's racing fenders.

After the video, if you look in the menu that pops up on YouTube, I found this video. Fantastic AP1 stock vs AP2 stock vs AP1 tuner race. AP2 really trashed the AP1.

LINK HERE
Did the gearing change, though? It's likely the AP2 transmission, but curious if it has the USDM or JDM reduction gear as well as the taller 6th gear.
Nope stock AP1 tranny/ diff ratios vs stock AP2 tranny/diff ratios.

Seems to be the suspension and gearing that gives the AP2 the boost. The 2.2L engine may or may not add much.

Better comparison video:
https://www.youtube.com/watch?v=QyGLd8SZM4g

2001 AP1 vs. 2004 AP2 S2000s at Spring Mountain Motorsports Park

The setups:
AP1 -
Tein springs on stock shocks
Saner front bar
255/40-17 949 6ULR 17x9 wheels with Maxxis RC-1
Brembo BBK
Test pipe with custom exhaust
AEM intake

AP2:
Eibach springs on stock shocks
Saner front bar
255/40-17 949 6ULR 17x9 wheels with Maxxis RC-1
StopTech BBK
Berk HFC with same custom exhaust
Stock cut airbox

The AP1 had more engine mods, but was carrying a 100lb passenger. Both were prepped identically, gutted identically, driven by the same driver.

AP2 was faster.

I don't think the debate surrounding which version of the S2000 is better will ever end, but I wish it would. Whether you have an AP1 or AP2 if one is faster than the other the difference is subtle, and either way you are driving a great sports car. Put the BS comparison/competition between the two chassis in the toilet and go enjoy driving your S2000.

By 8 tenths of a second. Really?!?

All I know is I liked the sound of the AP1 screaming down that track better than the AP2. But then, I'm biased!

Cool video. Thanks!

Yep, I was surprised too. The AP1 didn't require as much shifting, which was nice in certain parts, but the AP2 was able to carry more speed out of corners and at the end of the straights.

Mind you, the AP1 had 107K or so on it. the AP2 had 125K on it. So, it wasn't that the AP1 had a more worn engine...

Still, both are fun to drive. I miss my S2000 a lot.

Every "AP2" ever made has the 2.2 engine. That's what the AP2 in the VIN means.

What do you mean? In Europe and Asia AP2's never got the 2.2. All the way through 2008 they still had the 2.0 engines.

Look at the VIN in those cars: AP1 is what the VIN will read. They ain't AP2s without the magic VIN code.

Common convenient shorthand to think of all MY2004 and later cars as "AP2"s because the 2.2 engine and corresponding VIN is in the North American cars, but those 3 digits in the VIN just specify the engine, nothing else. All the cars got face-lifted in 2004 but only the North American cars got the stroked AP2 engine. AP1 and AP2 work here in the USA for convenience, but not in the rest of the world.

All AP2s are 2004 and later cars; but not all 2004 and later cars are AP2s.
