I think it comes down to expectations-- as Type R you were probably expecting some level of ultimate performance, which despite its motor it didn't offer. If you can let that go, I think the car's true charms come through-- a "fun" and highly pratical little car.
Before I got my S, I had performance aspirations for my Civic (EJ1). Didn't try to add power, but did suspension, seats, and a few other things. As soon as I got the S and saw what a real sports car was, I tuned down the shocks on the Civic and allowed it to be what it is, instead of trying to make it into a racer.
Now that I have, I love it more than ever- it is fun, cheap, comfortable, reliable, and has enough dings and dents and it is a totally stress free ownership experience.
The same holds true for an EP3-- it makes a medicore sports car, but a fantastic DD.

Well I have owned two other Type-R's and I work at the dealership so I know what to expect.
I sold my 98 model ITR to buy a 00 S2K. Sold the S and bought a 05 CTR. The CTR handles great and the engine performes wonderfully but after owning an S I just didn't feel the spark like I did with my former S. I liked the EDM ITR better with hugging Recaros and LSD. Type-R doesn't have the same legendary meaning in Europe like I have come of cross in the US. The only the the Civic Type-R has over the ITR in my opinion is the suspension and possibly the K20 engine.

Here's mine which I still have.
Mod list= AEM V2 intake, Jackson Racing Race Header w/testpipe, HKS Hi-power exhaust, BuddyClub Short Shifter, Skunk 2 shift knob, Progress Rear Sway w/Tie Bar, Eibach ProKits (1" drop), Tokico HP struts, Ingalls Engine Damper, TSW Rocket 5 wheels (18"x8"), carbon fiber Type R wing.
That's all for now. It's kinda hard to mod both the S2K and the EP3.
