My friend had one: intake, exhaust, and SAFC - It was a decent race for my old B16 CRX. Definately quick cars, even with the small amount of available mods.

But yes, you're right. It's a fairly common technology. I'd give an edge to Porsche's new system or Honda's i-VTEC.

porsche is no slouch, either. I mean vtec is good, but it just makes you sound like a ricer when people are like "man... and then I hit dat vtec and that ZO6 c6 had no chance.... I pulled him all the way up to 200 but then I ran out of gears"

haha i used to have a gts then a sti. gts wasnt that great.
