from what the picture shows, it looks like they hit the sidewalk sideways (meaning either an uncontrolled slide or a drift gone wrong), ripped the back wheel and panel off (you can see it on the left of the pic in the background), whapped the front against the sidewalk hard enough to break the bodywork free and slid to a stop... then again, I am not a traffic detective, but that is what I think happened

Ouch. I hope they're ok. One of the things that amazes me about these pictures is how much of the car survives serious (or serious looking) impacts. I saw a thread on this site right after I bought my S2K from a guy who rolled his two or three times. The cabin was intact and I felt much better about the safety of my purchase.
