I went to pick up the roll hoops this morning and didnt like what I saw. I had used rattle can primer to save some time and money and it had some pinholes and surface imprefections that really showed through the chrome paint. The painter and I decided that it really needed to be stripped and reprimered with catalyzed primer to get the results that i wanted. So, he is going to do that. Damn it.
Needless to say, they wont be going in today. Sorry bout that, I'm pretty disappointed, but this does give me a chance to tint the clear when he repaints them and go for more of a black chrome look. It'll be attempt #2 in a couple of weeks. Until then...keep the faith.

Painting is done. Here are the pics he snapped inside the booth.
With this new paint he is using, the chromed parts are not supposed to be exposed to sunlight for 7 days. I am shooting to have them installed next thurs. or fri.
Enjoy.

I've been trying to keep quiet until this is all done, but here is the situation as it stands. The seam between the two halves of the roll hoops is a real problem. I superglued it at the top of the roll hoops and that seam has stayed shut. Cracks, however developed under the clear on both sides. So, I had the hoops stripped back down to plastic and I am going up to his shop on Thursday to try supergluing the sides as well. He will then shoot them with catalyzed primer, give that a week to shrink and cure, and then we try the chrome again. This time with a black tint in the clear. I am going to let those sit for a week or so and see if the seam reappears. If it does, then I am done with the chroming and am going to wrap them in leather with an external seam (ala BMW Z8) and install them. So, best case scenario, I would guess it will be 3 more weeks, pessimistically, 6.
Holler!
