going to paris...
and am wondering which camera to take.
would you take a small 3 megapixel camera (easy to carry in your pocket) and shoot at a high resolution, or a 6 megapixel (such as nikon d-100) that is more bulky and harder to conceal, but would give higher quality pics?

I'm a firm believer in shooting the best resolution you got.

you guys got part of the dilema above... paris is known for pick-pockets and i sure wouldnt want to lose an expensive camera to one of them.
but on the other hand, i sure do want quality pics!!

Keep your hands on your camera and you'll be fine.

I was in Paris for 2 weeks, I think they pickpocket careless people.

a big, heavy camera (we're talkking digital SLR, right?) would be hard to pickpocket because it's easy to notice when it's not there, but a little point and shoot would be easy to grab, just my $.02

i lived in paris for almost 5 years....

yes there are pickpockets...gypsies mainly...little children swarming around you while one of them lifts the goods...it can happen anywhere...subway...or walking along the seine...such as the elderly japanese man that got cleaned by a pack of kids...what struck me about him was how well dressed he and his lady were...they stood out like sore thumbs relative to everybody else....

i used to carry my pocket camera everywhere...never had a problem with pickpockets...then again i didn't stand out like a mark...and that is key...it's ok to carry a camera around your neck...just make sure you look comfortable and 'belong' there...my last couple of trips back i carry a backpack of photogear..tripod in hand...never any issues....

have fun...

james

ps...starting in a couple of weeks the rainy season begins...make sure you bring stuff to protect the gear...

The fact that you are going to France I really wonder about, yet alone the camera.
