AP1.75 radio door
So, I have always kind of disliked the radio door on my AP2. The silver just looked out of place and like one of the "updates" that car companies do at model changes just to let the customer know that something is different. Not neccessarily better, just different. In one of the first MaxRev mags for the S2000, I saw a BYS radio door that had the old school Honda script logo on it and wanted to use that on my car. But, I also wanted to use the dimpled push areas on it like the AP2 door has. Here we go:
bought an AP1 radio door and drilled holes in the same pattern as the dimples are on the AP2 door. (9mm dimples located 9mm apart). Then, I used the same depth setting and drilled holes into a piece of nylon:
I then poured a two-part casting material into the holes and pressed a marble into the hole:
Once the material hardened (around 1 hour for the Fastcast that I was using), I pulled off the marble and the result was this button:
Popped out the button and after a coat of paint, here was the result:
made 10 of those and carefully glued them into the holes I drilled into the radio door:
Then, I took this photo of the BYS logos that I have on the side of my car and used it as an underlay to create a new digital file:
Here is a screendump of the file before I sent it off to have it rapid prototyped:
That came back and was really nicely done, but also really fragile. I made a mold of the original and started casting copies using the same material I used for the buttons.
After quite a few tries (and errors) Here was the final one all painted up and pretty:
Finally, here is a pic of it as it sits this morning. I have still not glued down the Honda script. I am debating its placement a bit. Hopefully, I will have time at lunch to remove my old door and replace it with this one.
Holler!

Not sure I like it but very original nonetheless. The "Honda" script seems too delicate in comparison to the buttons you've added. I think a heavier script would look better.
Personally, though, I'd do the standard "Honda" logo in solid, uppercase letters (as you see it on the back of a car), ie, "HONDA".

I'm almost wondering if I should leave off the Honda script and run with just the buttons...We'll see.
Here it is installed in the assembly.

Awesome project, I do wish the "Honda" was thicker/bigger/shinier.
Props for putting them long work hours to good personal use
