Default What Kind of Power can I Reliably Run

Hey guys,

So I hate to be the guy asking the standard question, but I'd like everyones honest input as to what kind of power levels I can run this summer without having any issues. I got word the other day that I'm going to be working out of town all summer, but it looks like I'll only be able to bring one car with me. I'm going to have to choose between my Protege 5 DD or the S2000. Given that the job is dependant on having a reliable vehicle, I'm trying to figure out what kind of power levels I can hit on the S2000 without taking a major hit in reliability.

The car has a built 2.5L IP stroker kit and was previously tuned by IP to hit 693/527 on C16. The car was later tuned for 530/348 on 94 octane. Unfortunately towards the end of last summer, the AP2 transmission in the car grenaded on me. I've picked up another AP1 tranny to swap in, but haven't had a chance to do the swap yet.

I've opted to remove the 6765 from the IP stage 2 turbo kit, and replace it with a 5857 for better spool and response.

So I guess what it ultimately comes down to is that I'm trying to get a better idea what kind of power I can run on the car without sacrificing reliability. If I can't find a reasonably reliable compromise, I'm going to have to park the S2000 for the entire summer and drive the beater, but I'd hate to do that as there wouldn't really be a point in owning the car.

Also, for the record, the car has the R200 diff and IP diff kit.

Sorry for the open ended post. I'm still getting used to the boosted S2000 scene, so I'd like some honest answers from the guys who've seen alot more than I have.

Thanks!

Honestly reliability is all on you. How much are you going to beat on the car. Being the engine is built boosted and tuned by IP I don't see why 600hp wouldn't be reliable. Like I said its all on you

I definitely know what you mean. I'm not even considering going that high.

I'd be more than happy with around 400whp, but I just want to be sure that the car can take it without any issues. I definitely don't beat on my vehicles, but I'd rather be safe than sorry. If that means running the car below 400, I'd be willing to do that aswell.

I'm not that worried about the motor. The biggest source of concern for me is the tranny.

Take the Protege and save yourself the headache and worry. Trust me.

I think the problem with people new to boost is that they don't understand that when you boost an N/A car or turn up the boost on an already boosted car from the factory, everything is magnified. A mis-shift going the wrong way etc. The margin for error decreases significantly.

Stick a 5857 on and retune for no more than 500hp and enjoy!

Did you read his post? Its a built for boost InlinePRO 2.5L engine. As long as it was built fine, it should hold a lot more than the 400whp he wants.

I would put the 6765 back on and max it out personally. Run low boost the majority of the time and high boost when you need it. The motor should hold fine.

it doesn't seem like he's worried about the motor. he seems like he's more worried about the tranny, which it doesn't matter how much power you are making, it can break under stock power through abuse.

bottomline: it can last forever if you take it easy, it'll break eventually if you don't.

Thanks for all of the quick responses guys.

I know the motor can take far more power than I plan on throwing at it. More than anything, I'm trying to get an honest gauge as to whether or not I can count on a 400whp S2000.

Should I consider getting it it tuned for around 450whp on the 5857 and then turning down the boost so that I'm only making about 350whp? Like I said earlier, I'd be comfortable running 350whp if it meant that I could drive the car this summer rather than having it parked for another year.
